Mustangs. The mysterious icon of the Wild West.

Described as legendary. The American Mustang, like our legendary and mighty warriors, America’s military veterans, battle the elements to survive. They both battle others of their kind for the resources necessary for life. Both mustangs and veterans are traumatized by humans, and the vagaries of life.

Spirit Horses began incorporating mustangs into our specialized horsemanship integration program two years ago. Owner-trainer, Bobbie Cross Guns trains all the horses, including the mustangs, and retrains some of the rescue horses, to be good citizens. They are the kind of horses anyone can approach and engage. The mustangs, because of their unique status in the world, are well suited to work with veterans and others who suffer from the whole panoply of stress-related mental health issues. They are hyper-vigilant, super curious, and very loyal.

The McCullough Peaks HMA (horse management area) wild horses are big and beautiful. Bobbie has been watching these horses since she was 15 years old.

The Fifteen-Mile HMA horses are another of Bobbie’s favorite wild horses.
